Fetch! Pet Care featured in The New York Enterprise Report

Fetch! Pet Care was recently featured in The New York Enterprise Report in an articled titled, "Imperfect Process of Picking Partners". Paul Mann discusses the process and criteria he used to find an ideal investor for his business endeavors. Click here to read the full article.

Imperfect Process of Picking Partners
By: Paul Mann

You’ve put in sweat and tears to grow and expand your business. It started as a small idea and now it has turned into a profit-generating operation that has withstood the test of time. Should you let investors become involved with something you’ve built from the ground up? When is the right time to take investment funds? How do you find the “perfect” partner? I’ve sought investors for two of my companies—one with reluctance and the other with ambition.

In my first company, an internet software business I founded during the dot-com boom, I took on investors too late. I had taken on investors who were active in both investing money and providing insights into my business. But I soon found that they lacked domain expertise in my industry, as well as physical availability to meet and discuss the growing daily needs of my business.

Charitable Holiday Season Brings A New Chance for Sammy

Fetch! Pet Care franchisee, Regina Cheung, was recently involved in an amazing pet rescue story about a Yorkie named Sammy.  Her “Rescue That Rescued Me” story is an inspirational story about a search for a new pet parent willing to adopt an elderly dog that outlived its parents.

Sammy, a 10-year old blind Yorkie, has known his entire life with his mom and dad.  But then last year Sammy’s dad passed away and he went to live with his mom in an assisted living facility.  Sammy was everything to his mom especially after his dad passed away.  But in the nursing home facility, Sammy had to wear a muzzle because he had bitten other people while there.  Then some time later, tragedy struck again and Beverly passed away from surgery complications leaving Sammy with few options for a new home.  During Sammy’s stay at the assisted living facility, Fetch! Pet Care dog sitter, Nancy, would come and walk Sammy twice a day so when Beverly passed, Nancy took in Sammy as a dog of her own for the time being.  Sammy had to learn how to live with Nancy’s other two dogs and they quickly became best friends, but Nancy couldn’t keep Sammy forever so left without other options, Rick, Beverly’s son, had little choice but consider putting Sammy up for adoption at the shelter.

Regina Cheung, owner of Fetch! Pet Care in Southern California, asked Nancy to care for Sammy for one more week.  Knowing that Sammy would be hard to adopt because of his age and condition, Regina made it her mission to find Sammy a new home.  She took videos and pictures of his sweet face to post on all the rescue websites as well as sent out an email blast to local rescuers.  One of the local rescuers posted a Facebook message about it and pet rescuer, Pat Chambers, all the way in Louisiana responded to that message that day saying that she and her husband had 6 small dogs and cats and a big house with a yard.  She also had experience with elderly dogs and was interested in giving Sammy a new home.  Sammy took a red eye flight with an animal transport service Regina found to Louisiana and he arrived to his new home with Pat, a part-time social worker, and her retired husband, just before Thanksgiving this year.

Regina rescued Sammy when he was most in need of a new home. This a great story that we at Fetch! wanted to share with our fans. Stories like this need to be brought to light and shared with everyone. They are so heart-felt and bring a smile to everyone's face. If you have a "Rescue Who Rescued Me" story you would like to share, enter it into our nation-wide search. We, along with our partners, Bark Magazine, Halo Purely for Pets, and FreeKibble.com, are on a search to find the best pet rescue. They winner with the best story, picture or video will be able to choose the shelter of their choice for FreeKibble to donate 10,000 free meals. Submissions end December 18th and voting starts December 19th.

Franchisee Profile: Jerry Dean of Sacramento, California

Name:  Jerry Dean
Opening Date: March 2011
Brand:   Fetch! Pet Care
Location: Sacramento
Q: Where are you from?
A: I moved to Sacramento from Redding, Calif., six months ago to invest in a Fetch! franchise.

Q: What was your career before franchising and why did you decide to open your own business in this industry?
A: I was a full-time driver for the past 10 years with two different companies – most recently FedEx. I was making 100 stops a day in six hours.  I got tired of doing that every day and I wanted a change from the corporate America lifestyle.

I’ve always loved animals and I have three cats, five dogs and a boa constrictor. I said, “The heck with it, I’ve got the money. I want to invest in a Fetch! franchise.”

Q: How did you learn about the brand?
A: I was walking through Costco one day on a (FedEx) delivery, and I saw a magazine with a list of franchises, and Fetch! was near the top of the list. I held onto that magazine for three years – I still have it – and I told myself one day I would own one. I kept that magazine where I could find it and used it as motivation. I was determined to make my dream become a reality.

Q: What was appealing to you about joining a franchise system?
A: At first, I thought about opening up a pet care service by myself, but after looking into it more, it seemed financially impossible. When I looked at Fetch!, I saw how structured, organized and efficient they were. They had a brand name that was dialed in, they had the software in place – everything was set up for you to hit the ground running, ready to go. It’s a beautiful setup.

Q: With regard to your previous experience, what skills do you feel helped you in your business?
A:  My previous job required me to be very efficient and organized and those are two skills that are absolutely necessary when starting a new business and making it successful.

Q: Why did you choose to enter the pet care industry?
A:   I have a huge passion for animals and really enjoy working with them every day. Pet care is an industry that is important to people who have animals and as a pet owner, I understand how important it is to give them the best care possible.

Q. What service does Fetch! predominately provide?
A: One of our more popular services are daily visits to take care of pets..  Most people work nine to five and don’t have the option to run home to let their pet out so we visit the pets, let them get out their energy, feed and walk them for their owners. We also provide private boarding, which a lot of people don’t know.  Owners bring their pet to a Fetch! sitter’s house for overnight sitting.

Q: How does your business connect with the community?
A:  Everyone loves their pets, so I think we connect with the community on that personal level.  Fetch!  allows us to really get to know the community on a much deeper level than other businesses because we work with their pets.  Anyone with a pet knows that they are much more than an animal; they are a family member.

Q: What’s the most outrageous pet you’ve tended to?
A: I walked a tortoise for a lady once for an hour a day in the backyard of her house.  He was surprisingly very energetic and I had to keep a close eye on him so he wouldn’t end up missing.

Q: How many clients do you have so far and what are your expansion or development plans for the next year or two?
A: Right now we have around 140 clients. In my first year of business, I would like to see steady growth.

Four Leading Pet Advocates Come Together to Award a Pet Shelter with 10,000 Meals

Right before Paul Mann founded Fetch! Pet Care, the nation’s largest dog walking and pet sitting franchise, in 2002, he rescued an abandoned and severely distressed cat from the San Francisco SPCA named Finnigan. Finnigan had multiple issues when Mann took him in, including food deprivation.  At that time, Mann resolved that he would help more than just two rescued pets (Mann later rescued a dog named Milo).  That time has come as Fetch! Pet Care has put together a campaign so that other great rescue stories could shine in the hope that more pets could be helped.

Finnigan
Together with The Bark magazine, Halo Purely forPets, and FreeKibble.com, Mann’s Fetch! Pet Care will host a nationwide contest titled The Rescue Who Rescued Me for pet owners to share their tale of how they saved a pet through rescue or adoption.  The person whose picture or video submission receives the most votes of their rescued pet will be awarded the opportunity to select the pet shelter of their choice in which FreeKibble will donate 10,000 free meals, equivalent to 2,500 pounds of pet food.

“I got into the pet industry because I wanted to help pets everywhere receive the best care possible.  I had experienced and heard of too many horror stories about pets not being treated respectfully.  This nationwide contest is a way to bring out all those great rescue stories from people who are heroes in their own right,” said Mann.  “Luckily, we have some great partners that are equally invested in the proper care for pets and are allowing us the opportunity to award 10,000 meals of Halo Spot’s Stew pet food to a deserving shelter that needs it now more than ever.”

In order for rescuers to share their stories, they can submit their photos or videos and descriptions on Fetch! Pet Care’s Facebook Fan page at www.facebook.com/fetchcorporate through the “Rescue Who Rescued Me Contest” link from Nov. 16 to Dec. 18.  The Grand Prize winner will be featured in the March edition of The Bark magazine and the shelter of the winner’s choosing will receive 10,000 free nutritious meals of Halo’s Spot’s Stew from FreeKibble.com.

“We believe that the collection of these photos, videos and stories will help promote awareness for pets that need good homes and families to love and care for them,” said Mann, “We encourage everyone to spread the word and promote adopting a rescue pet this holiday season.”

Fetch! Pet Care feature in the Oak Forest Patch

Fetch! Pet Care was recently featured in the Oak Forest Patch in an article entitled, "Local Woman's Career Goes to the Dogs." Oak Forest Patch reporter Lauren Traut compiled an article about Fetch! Pet Care business owner Linda Stevens’ career, from working in the housing industry and getting out right before the recession to owning seven Fetch! Pet Care locations. Stevens wanted to continue working, but wanted a career that she was passionate about that would allow her to spend time with her young son. As an animal lover, Stevens found the best of both worlds with Fetch! Pet Care and now owns territories all over Chicagoland. As for her choice to make the switch, Stevens says in the article, “It’s the best decision I ever made.” Click here to view the entire article.

By: Lauren Traut

Linda Stevens left her career in the construction business just in time—before the housing market crashed.
After 20 years in the business, the wife and mother found herself on new, shaky ground after quitting her job in 2005. Stevens was looking to live her dream of having a career, without sacrificing time with her family. She had always loved animals, and when an opportunity arose to start her own franchise of a national pet sitting and and dog walking business, she was intrigued.
"My son was younger, I wanted to spend time with my family," Stevens said. "I had to change my lifestyle."

Fetch! Pet Care feature in EntrepreneurStartups Magazine

Recently EntrepreneurStartups Magazine featured Fetch! Pet Care franchisee Peggy Kennedy in an article called “How Social Media and a Sprinkle of Stardust Led to One Franchisee’s Success,” which published this month.  Peggy had made an amazing transition from the corporate finance world on the East Coast to Fetch! franchisee on the West Coast.  Since moving and starting her business, she has adapted to a great lifestyle where she does what she is passionate about and leads the lifestyle she wants. Click here to read the entire article.

How Social Media and a Sprinkle of Stardust Led to One Franchisee's Success
By: David Port

When Peggy Kennedy says she's working near capacity, she's no longer talking in terms of late nights at the office, polishing PowerPoint presentations. For Kennedy, who formerly worked in financial services on the East Coast and found refuge as a West Coast pet-care industry franchise owner, nowadays it's about the time she and her staff spend caring for clients of the four-legged variety.
"I'm working all the time--weekends, vacations, I'm always checking in. And I'm adding administrative staff just to keep up," says Kennedy, referring to the Fetch! Pet Care franchise she's been running in the Los Angeles area since 2006. Buoyed by a largely word-of-mouth clientele sprinkled with Hollywood celebs and their pets, her pet-sitting and dog-walking operation hit all-time highs this summer for monthly revenue, grossing more than $30,000, up from $1,500 in its early days.

Want to be a Superhero?

Rescue a Shelter Dog... and Get a Loyal Sidekick for All of Life's Adventures

You can save the day for a homeless dog -- and find a faithful companion who will be at your side for all of life's adventures -- by adopting a dog from your local shelter or breed-rescue group during American Humane's Adopt-A-Dog Month® in October.

Adopting a dog is a heroic feat that's easy to perform, and animal shelters and breed-rescue groups are filled with amazing dogs: large, small, mixed breeds, even purebreds. In fact, millions of loyal, lovable dogs are surrendered to our nation's animal welfare organizations every year because their owners simply couldn't take care of them anymore. Now they're homeless -- and just waiting for a hero like you!

During Adopt-A-Dog Month, we encourage you to visit your local shelter or breed-rescue group, meet potential sidekicks and discover the many super-size benefits of having a dog: happiness, companionship, improved physical and emotional health, and devoted love. Dogs also encourage people to exercise, enhance family and social relationships, promote laughter and act as a nonjudgmental audience and sounding board. No that's super!

American Humane works year-round to support animal welfare organizations, promote adoptions and enhance the bond that people share with their companion animals. And each year during Adopt-A-Dog Month, we give shelters tools and resources to continue fostering connections between people and pets.

If you're ready to find your very own faithful canine companion, check out American Humane's resources to learn about the adoption centers, shelter and rescue groups, and adoption stories.

Strikingly Similar: Pets and Owners Compete in Facebook Look-Alike Contest

Together with Trupanion®, Fetch! Pet Care Uses Facebook to Strengthen Interactions with Fans

WALNUT CREEK, CAEven Grandma and Grandpa are on Facebook nowadays, so it’s no surprise that pets increasingly have their own Facebook profile as well.  In fact, the line between pets and owners is increasingly close, and many studies support the old adage that people resemble their pets. As such, Fetch! Pet Care invites contestants to vie for winner of their first “Pet Look-Alike” contest. Fetch! Pet Care is the largest pet sitting and dog walking franchise in the United States. The contest is being sponsored together with Trupanion®, a leading pet insurance company.

In order to compete, fans should “like” the Fetch! Pet Care page on Facebook at www.facebook.com/fetchcorporate. Through the “Pet Look-Alike Contest” link, from Sept. 19 to Oct. 16, pet owners can upload their photo, photo title and photo description, which will then be put up for voting from October 17 until October 31. The winning submission will receive an Apple iPad.

“The beauty of Facebook is that anyone can easily compete,” said Elyse Marks, Director of Marketing for Fetch! Pet Care. “The results should be hilarious – same pouf or curly hair to the same ears or jowls – we want to see it all!”

Photos are not limited to similar body appearance. Whether it’s an uncanny resemblance, matching outfits, or a fun pose, Fetch! Pet Care hopes to capture more pets and their owners having a good time together.

“As a brand, it was important for us to find more ways to interact with our current and future customers,” said Paul Mann, founder and CEO of Fetch! Pet Care. “Through the power of social media, we can learn more about our customers while interacting with them in their personal space. The value of this process to both our brand and pet owners everywhere is priceless. We want to know our customers, fans and pets by name.”

The foundation of the contest was built from founder Mann’s passion for pets. An avid animal lover himself, Mann started the business when he needed a pet sitter while he was traveling. After tirelessly interviewing local pet sitters in his search for someone to entrust his furry babies and his house to, he had an "Aha!" moment. It wasn't a simple problem at all — it was really hard to find someone reliable and loving to care for his pets the way he did, and was a common problem experienced by most pet parents.

Today, Fetch! Pet Care is the nation's largest and most trusted provider of professional pet sitting and dog walking services, serving thousands of pets and pet parents from coast to coast. Fetch! Pet Care pet sitters are highly experienced professionals who are pet parents themselves, intuitively and professionally understanding what pets and pet owners need. The sitters care for all types of pets, no matter the size or species — they’re dog, cat, bird and even snake and spider people.

Fetch! Pet Care featured on BusinessNewsDaily.com

Fetch! Pet Care was featured on BusinessNewsDaily.com. BusinessNewsDaily reporter Kim Zimmermann spoke with Chief Executive of Fetch Pet Care Paul Mann on what characteristics small business owners should look for in investors. The article titled “How You Know It’s Time To Find An Investor” gives entrepreneurs some tips on when it may be the right time to find investors and what a small business may need from investors.  The article is based off of Paul Mann’s experience in finding a great partnership in Cybeck Capital Partners whose vision for growing the franchise to 500 locations by 2015 perfectly aligned with Mann’s vision.  Click here to view the full article.

By: Kim Ann Zimmermann

At some point, every young business comes to a crossroad. Perhaps the entrepreneur lacks the funding to take their idea any further. Or, maybe the business owner is good at certain aspects of running the business—such as wooing new clients and identifying areas of potential growth—but needs some assistance with budgeting and setting priorities if they want to expand.

How does a business owner know when is it time to bring in an investor?

For Paul Mann, the founder and CEO of Fetch! Pet Care, a national dog walking and pet services franchise based in Walnut Creek, Calif., the moment was when he realized his "teenager" of a business would need help in becoming an "adult" as the number of franchised units grew from 33 to 200 from 2006 to 2008.

Fetch! Pet Care was recently featured in Delta Sky Magazine in an article entitled“One, Then Many.Fetch! Pet Care franchisee Kelly Strowd was featured for her experience in owning her own business with Fetch!  Tired of her job as a police officer, Strowd became a Fetch! franchisee in 2006 due to her love of animals. In just a short time, she acquired more territories and expanded her business which further solidified her decision to go into franchising.  Click here to view the full article on pages 4 & 5.

One, Then Many
By: Jonathan Maze

Kelly Strowd never imagined she would operate a franchise. As a police detective investigating sexual assaults and domestic violence in Carrboro County, North Carolina, she enjoyed good benefits, but the pay wasn't enough that she could envision herself owning a business.

Still, the stress of her job was wearing on her. "I was getting burned out," she says. So when she saw a newspaper ad for a new pet sitting franchise called Fetch, she was intrigued. An animal lover, she had been involved in dachshund rescue services and had cared for five dachshunds herself.

Fetch! Pet Care | Best Pet Ever Contest Winner

Kathy Schmidt is the owner of Sadie, Fetch! Pet Care Best Pet Ever Contest Winner! Sadie is a one and a half years old Brussels/Griffin mix and they live in Kirkwood, WA. Here is a little bit about our winner Sadie!

Q: How old is Sadie?
A: She is one and a half. It feels like we have had her forever and I can’t imagine not having her!

Q: What type of dog is Sadie?
A: Sadie is a Brussels/Griffin mix. She has a beard like a Brussels.

Q: How did you come to own Sadie?
A: My husband and I adopted her about 5 months ago from Ginger’s Pet Rescue in Seattle. They rescue dogs from CA and fly them to Seattle. They do this because there is a higher percentage of kills shelters in CA. She’s really smart and very sweet. She’s learning a ton of new tricks.

Q: What is your favorite past time with Sadie?
A: My favorite past time with Sadie is walking. I feel more connected to the city because of our walks. She loves to go on long walks, except when it's raining. I had to get her a little rain coat because she is terrified of walking in the rain!

Q: How did you first learn about Fetch! Pet Care?
A: One of my friends owns a Fetch! Pet Care. When my husband and I got Sadie, we had a trip that was planned a year previous, but we didn’t want to leave Sadie at the kennel or the vet.  We wanted her to be at home so I looked up pet services and a couple of coworkers told me about Fetch! We have used Georgia, one of our favorite sitters, quite a few times now.

Q: What do you do for a living?
A: I am graphic designer in Seattle. My husband works in Kirkland.

Fetch! Pet Care Named to Entrepreneur’s Best of the Best List

Fetch! Pet Care was recently named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s 2011 Best of the Best list. The national pet sitting and dog walking franchise was selected as the best pet services franchise, exemplifying the brand’s commitment to providing the highest standard of professional pet care services.

Founded in 2002 after struggling to find consistent, reliable care for his pets while traveling, Paul Mann has grown Fetch! Pet Care into a nationwide business that now includes more than 3,000 experienced pet sitters operating in 1,500 U.S. communities. Specializing in providing in-home pet care services, Mann created Fetch! Pet Care with the goal of building a dependable business that could be duplicated through franchising.

“To be recognized by Entrepreneur as the best brand in the pet services category speaks to the consistently high level of care our franchise owners and their staff provide to pets and their parents everyday,” Mann said. “When I founded the company, I had heard so many stories about pet sitters not showing up, or pets getting lost or injured under the care of the kid next door. I knew Fetch! had to eliminate those concerns and add a greater level of reliability to our services in order for us to be successful.”

Focusing on unsurpassed customer service, Fetch! Pet Care franchisees aim to deliver peace of mind to pet parents by bringing the service to their doorstep. Instead of keeping their furry friend in a kennel or boarding facility all day with little time for play, Fetch! Pet Care customers know their pet is safe and comfortable in its familiar surroundings while it is being looked after.

Mann implemented a system that requires pet sitters to leave “report cards” that show parents how their pets are doing and the activities they engaged in during the day. Integrating technology into the business, many of the brand’s pet sitters also text message pet parents to provide them with instant updates on their pet.

“It’s the combined effect of everything we do that leaves the customer knowing their pet is getting the most attention possible,” Mann said. “With a 92 percent referral rate to friends and family, we know we’re doing something right. Our goal is to continue to refine our systems, processes and procedures, so we can provide an even better experience for our customers as we go forward.”

Franchisee Spotlight: Karen Culley & Danielle Proctor – N. Pittsburgh

Originally loyal customers of Fetch! Pet Care, friends Karen Culley and Danielle Proctor took the leap into business ownership together in 2008 when they bought an existing franchise from an owner who was moving to a different state. Knowing that business ownership can put a strain on friendships, the two work hard to maintain a balance between their business and friendship to ensure they are able to work well together and continue to have fun as friends. Each with a strong background in business, the pair splits responsibilities to ensure all aspects of the business are looked after. Karen has four cats, and Danielle as one dog, one cat and a chinchilla.

Q: What were your careers before franchising?
Karen: I worked as a paralegal and corporate manager for a privately owned family investment company for 25 years before accepting an early retirement package and retiring for a year. I now work for a private wealth manager in addition to owning Fetch! Although the clients are definitely a lot different (some with fur, some without), there are many similarities in the areas of customer service and the need to be efficient and organized.
Danielle: I am somewhat of a serial entrepreneur. I had been in the software industry for 12 years when I left to start my own construction company back in 2003. It was around that time that I fell in love with golf, which is how I met Karen, and I started to get into the golfing scene. While golfing I was injured and as a result I began to do Pilates. I liked it so much that I started my own Pilates studio, too — so I own three businesses right now. My philosophy is that I see businesses that are out there and I want to see how I can run them to make them better. I’ve brought that mentality to running Fetch!, where we are purely customer driven rather than focusing on the mentality of being driven by the masses.

Q: How did you decide to start a business together?

Karen: We both discovered Fetch! as clients before we considered buying the franchise. When we heard that the former owner was relocating out of state and was interested in selling her business, we explored the possibilities. As animal lovers, we had always talked about going into business together and doing something that focused on animals, so this seemed like a natural fit and a good opportunity. By purchasing an existing franchise, as opposed to starting a new franchise location, we were able to hit the ground running without having to experience the early growing pains of a new business. Of course, we had to really keep on our toes to make sure our existing clients and sitters were taken care of seamlessly.

Q: What has business been like since you took over?

Karen: We have grown slowly and steadily, relying on the Internet and word-of-mouth, rather than spending a lot of money on print advertising. Because Pittsburgh is such a big city, local advertising in all the areas that we cover proved to be costly. We sometimes see a slowdown in the winter months for obvious reasons, but we have never had any bad months. Last year was our best performance to date, increasing our gross sales by more than 70 percent. We now have more than 40 sitters and we cover the City of Pittsburgh and all points North.

Q: Was there a moment that you knew this was the right move for you?

Danielle: The morning we were leaving for our training in San Francisco, one of Karen’s cats wasn’t feeling well. In fact, she was worried that there was a serious problem. She had to make a decision as to whether to continue to San Francisco or turn around and go home. She called her Fetch! sitter, who promptly took the cat to the emergency room. When our flight landed in California and I turned on my phone, I had a message that my chinchilla had gotten its leg caught in its cage and was also on its way to the emergency room. We both wondered if this was some kind of omen. What it really showed us was how good our pet sitters are and how well equipped they are to handle any situation. They each sat with our animals and saw them through their emergencies. That experience solidified our decision to join Fetch! It drove home the point that our sitters are really our best asset.

Q: What are your expansion or development plans?
Danielle: For this franchise, expansion comes in the form of ZIP codes. We recently bought two more ZIP codes and already have a double territory. We are quickly expanding our coverage to service more people’s pet sitting needs.

Either the franchises already have a presence in Connecticut, have excellent sales from limited locations and want to expand; or the franchises exist in far off places and are lured by the promise of higher incomes and positioning between Boston and New York.
